2.0 Environmental Governance and Management
2.1 Defining
Environmental Governance (GEG) is the sum of organizations, policy instruments, financing mechanisms, rules, procedures and norms that regulate the processes of global environmental protection. Environmental Governance is the means by which society determines and acts on goals and priorities related to the management of environmental and natural resources. This includes the multiple actors, structures, institutions (rules, both formal and informal) that govern human behaviour in decision-making processes and the resulting decisions. Good environmental governance is based on an appropriate legal frameworks on the global, regional, national and local level that ensures inclusiveness, equitable, sustainability, accountability and transparency (Muchemi et al., 2016 forthcoming; IUCN, 2014; Najam, et al., 2006; WCED, 1987).
2.2 Goal of Environmental Governance
“The goal of environmental governance is to improve the state of the environment and to eventually lead to the broader goal of sustainable development.”
2.3 Aim of Environmental Governance
Environmental governance provides an understanding on the institutional frameworks of rules and practices that policy actors follows making collective action decisions in regulating the interactions and behavior of multiple actors towards environmental stewardship.
2.4 Environmental Management
Environmental management deals with the regulation process and protection of the health of our planet, by promoting human behaviours that make a positive impact on the natural environment.
